CROSS COUNTRY SEASON OPENER.
Limerick AC men’s team opened their cross country season with a strong display of running taking both the team and individual title at the 8km open cross country race held within the leafy confines of Newcastle West Demesne.
Limerick AC athlete Colm Turner led from the start to finish but never got far from the chasing duo of teammate and training partner Paul Fitzgerald and last years winner of the event Aogan Mac Domhnaill running for Donore Harriers.
Fitzgerald put in a great burst of speed down the home straight to hold off Mac Domhnaill for 2nd in a scintillating sprint finish. It could have been a different story for Fitzgerald, had team coach Will Logan not roared across the field warning him of fast finishing Mac Domhnaill.
Next to cross the line for LAC was the ever improving Keith Daly for a fine 6th place. A performance that he was happy with and confirms that his training is bringing him in the right direction.
The ever consistent Keith Ryan put in another solid performance with 13th place, while the remaining team members Mark O’ Dwyer (aka Mary O Dwyer) and Cathal O’ Hara finished 15th and 22nd respectively.
Cathal‘s performance was particularly welcome considering he is fresh off recovering from a stress fracture in his right foot, a particularly nasty injury to endure.
The team and coach Will Logan can come away from Sunday very pleased with their performance and will continue to build upon this for the season ahead.
The only regret of the day came from former GAA and fan Fitzgerald who expressed his regret at missing the Semi final between Dublin and Mayo. Much to his relief he can watch the replay next week!!
