LIMERICK ATHLETIC CLUB had three individual athletes compete on day two of the GloHealth National Juvenile Indoor Championships this March 22, 2015 at the Athlone International Arena.

Sarah Hosey

Munster Silver medalist Sarah Hosey is the fourth fastest eleven-year-old over 600m in the country. Her proud father and LAC Coach Frank Hosey provides this report on her race.

Sarah finished fourth in a field of 15 competitors in the Girls U-12 600m in Athlone today. In doing so she knocked more than 3seconds off her previous Personal Best (1:51.24) to record a time of 1:48:13. The fast finishing Sarah finished two tenths of a second behind Aimee Doherty who won the bronze medal. Sarah closed in on the bronze medal winner all the way to the line and finished two tenths of a second away from the podium. The race was won by Galway City Harriers up and coming star Emma Moore whose 1:45.53 performance was almost two seconds inside the previous championship best.

LAC was under the starters’ gun once more when Stanley Ikeh and Junior Echeruwe lined out for the Boys U-17 60m sprints. From lane two in heat one Junior posted a time of 7.55secs over the 60m and narrowly missed out on final qualification while Stanley’s 7.32secs from lane six in heat three guaranteed him a final spot.

Stanley emerged from the blocks impressively and hit the blue boards with immense speed and in one of the closest finishes with a mere one tenth of a second separating five athletes and young Ikeh had to settle for fourth position with his 7.32secs and was extremely unlucky not to have taken a medal home.

Participating in the championship’s opening event was the LAC Girls 4x100m U-13 team of Ciara Grimes, Emer Ryan, Ella Hession, Dharma Griffin who finish third in their heat in a time of 58.63secs and narrowly missed out on a final spot.

Their coach Dave Ryan said following the result: “The U13 Girls relay team ran a very determined and gutsy race today, just missing out on the final by less than 2 seconds.

It was the first time that all four of these promising young LAC athletes have competed at the National Indoors and this team were one of only three relay teams from LAC to make the these finals along with being the only girls team from LAC to qualify.

From their performance today, this team certainly have a very bright future ahead together for LAC.

It was an invaluable experience for them all to compete against the top athletes in the country and experience racing at a national level which is the pinnacle of indoor track racing in the country and where the creams of the crop compete.

After today’s result this team are now in the Top 10 U13 Relay teams in the country, a fantastic achievement in itself and an extremely proud coach also.”
